John Leland

Desc: This is about the traveller, writer, map maker John Leland who was sent on a royal commision by Henry VIII to collect the spiritual literature of pre protestant England from the monastries libraries but turned this into a detailed study of the face England and at this time there was still no detailed maps or guides of the country. This led to Lelands eventual madness. At first he made overnight stops in the monestries but as these closed he stayed with the local gentry, very grand, John Leland.

Ministry on my mind

Desc: http://www.johnnewton.org. John Newton, author of Amazing Grace: previously unpublished journal. John Langlois, Chairman of The John Newton Project, and Tony Baker, one of its trustees, discuss a previously unpublished journal of John Newtons. Still relatively young in faith, Newton was considering whether God was calling him into full time Christian pastoral ministry. He studied the Scriptures to see what would be required of a minister of the Gospel. On his birthday in August 1758 he took the decision that would launch him into a life of service. His worldwide influence became enormous through literature, hymns, preaching, mentoring and prayer. He was the catalyst behind the foundation of many Christian missionary societies of a variety of denominations, the first editor of the poems of William Cowper, the mentor of William Wilberforce for 20 years and a major contributor in the abolition of the slave trade. Newton encouraged many young people to develop spiritual maturity. He nominated and subsequently supported pioneer missionaries to India and Australia. New Jersey College, now Princeton University, conferred an honorary degree on Newton in the same year as it did for Thomas Jefferson. Newtons journal which he entitled Miscellaneous Thoughts, now published as Ministry on my mind, is part of a project to make available The Complete Works of John Newton online and in print. Newtons writings are hugely encouraging for all Christians, especially for those training for or already in full time ministry. For more information see www.johnnewton.org.
