KATYN MASSACRE execution of Polish officers

Desc: On 17 September 1939, in violation of the Polish-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact, the Red Army invaded the territory of Poland from the east. In the wake of the Red Army's quick advance, which met little resistance, between 250,000 and 454,700 Polish soldiers had become prisoners and were interned by the Soviets. On 5 March 1940, pursuant to a note to Joseph Stalin from Lavrenty Beria, the members of the Soviet Politburo — Stalin, Vyacheslav Molotov, Lazar Kaganovich, Mikhail Kalinin, Kliment Voroshilov and Anastas Mikoyan; signed an order to execute 25,700 Polish "nationalists and counterrevolutionaries" kept at camps and prisons in occupied western Ukraine and Belarus. Fate of the missing prisoners remained unknown until April 1943 when the German Wehrmacht (actually Rudolf Christoph Freiherr von Gersdorff) discovered the mass grave of 4,243 Polish military reserve officers in the forest on Goat Hill near Katyn.
The Western Allies had an implicit, if unwilling, hand in the cover-up in their endeavour not to antagonise a then-ally, the Soviet Union.
In Katyn massacre NKVD murdered: an admiral, two generals, 24 colonels, 79 lieutenant colonels, 258 majors, 654 captains, 17 naval captains, 3,420 NCOs, seven chaplains, three landowners, a prince, 43 officials, 85 privates, and 131 refugees. Also among the dead were 20 university professors, 300 physicians, several hundred lawyers, engineers, and teachers; and more than 100 writers and journalists as well as about 200 pilots. The number of victims is estimated at about 22,000, with the most commonly cited number of 21,768. The victims were murdered in the Katyn forest in Russia, the Kalinin (Tver) and Kharkiv prisons and elsewhere.

As the Russian army lurches from one disaster to another there is a school that hopes to revive the spirit of the old Russian officers. Proudly marching with their pre-revolutionary replica uniforms, the young boys from Voronezh Cadet Corps present a very different Image to the one portrayed by the communists for most of this century. Reopened five years ago, the school aims to instil old rituals and attitudes. 'Honour, dignity and self-sacrifice for the Motherland' smacks of nationalism, but Alexander Golemedov, the School's Director points to the history of the Russian army, when 150 nationalities served in harmony with one another. The state provided the dilapidated buildings, but the boys' families must provide the money for everything else. Many find it a struggle to raise the £30 a month but Georgi Stepanovich feels it's worth it to see his grandson receive a traditional education. In first lesson of the day, ballroom dancing, the boys take tentative steps with their pretty partners from a nearby state school.. Will the reality of an army that is rarely paid, badly fed and brutalised shake the ideology of these young hopefuls? |

Long Beach Police officers shoot & kill suspect on live TV

Desc: After a high speed pursuit traveling east on Anaheim through Long Beach, auto theft suspect pulls into McDonald's parking lot (3302 E Anaheim St, Long Beach, CA) on Anaheim Street & Newport Avenue near Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) in Long Beach. As he attempts to flee, police officers shoot the suspect who brandishes a semi-automatic weapon. As suspect falls to the concrete and looses his gun, he attempts to pull out another object from his front pocket as Long Beach Police deliver the fatal shots. The suspect was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Chase began on 21st & Olive Avenue in the City of Long Beach but the chase crossed jurisdictions into Carson, Torrance, San Pedro (Los Angeles), and Wilmington (Los Angeles).
