Desc: Homosexuality as a sexual orientation refers to "an enduring pattern of or disposition to experience sexual, affectional, or romantic attractions primarily to" people of the same sex; "it also refers to an individual’s sense of personal and social identity based on those attractions, behaviors expressing them, and membership in a community of others who share them."[1][2] The exact proportion of the population that is homosexual is difficult to estimate reliably,[3] but studies place it at 2–7%.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] It is distinguished from a bisexual or heterosexual orientation.
Researchers have looked into a variety of possible causes for a homosexual orientation, including biological influences, prenatal hormones, prenatal stress, fraternal birth order, and environmental influences.[25] The American Psychiatric Association has stated "some people believe that sexual orientation is innate and fixed; however, sexual orientation develops across a person’s lifetime."[26] However, the American Psychological Association has stated "most people experience little or no sense of choice about their sexual orientation."[27] |

Students Find Common Ground

Desc: On the Wednesday of each freshman orientation week this summer, the incoming students participating in the Common Ground program get to know their new city — and make lots of new friends.
The program sends students, armed with GPS devices, on a scavenger hunt through Boston to find various historical and social landmarks, such as the Boston Public Library, the Old North Church, the Boston Common, the New England Aquarium, and Quincy Market.
The University offers the three-day mandatory orientation program in seven sessions during June and July. An orientation program is available at the same time for parents who are interested.
On one recent Wednesday expedition, students led by orientation leader Holly Nicely (CAS'11) explored the streets of Boston on their way to their first stop, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, 280 The Fenway. They continued on to the Museum of Fine Arts and finally the Christian Science Center, both on Huntington Avenue. Between each destination, Nicely had the students sit in circles and share a fact about themselves or play games, such as rock, paper, scissors, to break the ice.
Common Ground, an exercise based on the belief of Howard Thurman (Hon.'67), former dean of Marsh Chapel, that we have more in common with each other than we have differences, takes place from 1 to 4 p.m. each Wednesday of orientation. definition: a neologism describing sexual orientation, first coined by activists/theorists Carol Queen and Lawrence Schimel in a 1997 anthology of essays entitled "PoMoSexuals: Challenging Assumptions About Gender and Sexuality". The term 'PoMoSexual', prefix "pomo" (post-modern) and "sexual" (implying orientation or preference), is oxymoronic in itself as it describes individuals who don't identify by any of the sexual orientation labels (e.g. straight, gay, bi, trans etc.), but is used in reference to label oneself as a protester against such labels. Are you still following me?

Desc: Here at the University of California Irvine, there is a program called SPOP (Student Parent Orientation Program). Each year, incoming freshman are required to go through this program in order to register for classes, get accustomed to the campus, and meet new & current UCI students. The goal of this program is to help give the incoming freshman a comfortable and easy transition into UCI.
A staff of 140 current UCI students volunteer for this program to facilitate this 2-day orientation. For many, SPOP has long been known to have not just been an "orientation program." It's more than that. Each year SPOP has literally changed lives & has made deep impacts on not only the lives of the new freshman but on the staffers as well.
In this documentary, I interview over 100 of these staffers, including their coordinators, and ask them what their take on SPOP is. |

Ex-Gay Therapy Stunted My Creative Growth

Desc: Constantly reparative therapy groups often confuse gender identity and sexual orientation, thus changing the unique personalities of great people in attempt to change their sexual orientation.
I was taught that my "non-masculine" behaviors (such as theatre, choir, etc) were causing me to be gay, when in fact, gender expression has nothing to do with a person's sexual orientation.
I was forced to give up those things and the wounds still exist and still hurt time to time.
