Desc: Inspired by Improv Everywhere's Frozen Grand Central, the people of Perth pull off their own Time Freeze - and The Couch was there to capture it all. In the midst of torrential rains and a thunder storm, everyone met at the State Library to be briefed before dispersing throughout the Murray Street Mall. When they heard the cue (the air horn) they were to FREEZE for 5 minutes. Watch for the expressions of people who don't know what's going on. Thanks to the hundreds of people who turned out. Desc: Our 2007 display, sponsored by Messages On Hold and Christmas Kingdom, featured 26,500 light bulbs, 128 lighting channels, 5 kilometres of cable, 250 man hours to set up and just $3.40/night in power to run. This year's display is even bigger and runs from December 5 - 24th inclusive. Come early and pls park on the Foreshore to avoid angry neighbours. Lights were synchronised to various music tracks (this one is Wizards in Winter by TSO) which were heard by motorists on 92.5FM. Those visiting the Bishop Riley Way home in Churchlands WA during December 2007 chipped in $12,000 for the Princess Margaret Children's Hospital. A sterling effort. Special thanks to all the Floreat Lakes residents, Antonia Spiers, Mike from Project Renovations, Danny Green and Leanne Hildreth - oh, and Santa who made a surprise appearance on Christmas Eve!

Desc: After suffering two nerve-racking pylon hits in each of his first two training sessions in Perth, Hannes Arch finally settled down in the third and final timed session on Friday before the weekend's Red Bull Air Race to record the second fastest result of the day behind rival Paul Bonhomme. The Brit, the only pilot who still has a shot of snatching the World Championship away from Arch, applied pressure on the second-year sensation from Austria with a superb time of 1:14.34 on the treacherous Perth course full of gusting winds and tight turns. Bonhomme's time was 0.96 seconds second faster than Arch, who is 9 points ahead of Bonhomme in the Championship with 54 points. "It's very good to have him feeling the pressure," said Bonhomme, who has 45 points and could win the title if he were to collect 9 points for a victory on Sunday and Arch fails to score any points - which hasn't happened to the Austrian in the Edge 540 since last year's race in Perth. "We've got to put the pressure on him. It'd be rude if we didn't. It wouldn't be any fun if we just let him romp away and win." Arch, who moved ahead of Bonhomme into the lead with a victory in the last race in Porto, insisted he wasn't bothered by the two pylon hits - even though one in Friday's early session was a direct hit. "It's better to hit the pylon now than on race day," Arch said after Friday's first session. "I didn't just nick it with the propeller. I hit it with the whole plane. I flew straight into it and the pylon exploded. But that's what they're here for. I don't think it had anything to do with nerves, not at all. I felt really good out there, really calm. Even after the pylon hit I did a fast time on the rest of the track, so I'm confident. This was only training and the objective is to go for the max and find the best line. One line today obviously didn't work."

Desc: Britain’s Paul Bonhomme scored a stylish victory in the final race of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship in Perth on Sunday in front of a crowd of more than 200,000 spectators while Hannes Arch was crowned 2008 World Champion after finishing third. It was the 7th podium in 8 races this year for the remarkably consistent ace from Austria. Bonhomme collected his 4th victory trophy of the season with a triumph over compatriot Nigel Lamb on a sunny afternoon in Western Australia to take second place overall for the second consecutive year. Arch became the first European to win the World Championship after Americans Mike Mangold (2005, 2007) and Kirby Chambliss (2006) won the title for the world’s most exciting high-speed, low-altitude precision-flying competition. An extreme sports adventurer, Arch said his unusual background in sports, a superb plane, a strong ground crew and tireless efforts to improve helped him shake up the race hierarchy in only his second season. He rose from 10th in his rookie season to first this year. Most of his rivals in the 12-pilot field have backgrounds in military or commercial aviation. At a good-natured press conference in Perth, both Arch and Bonhomme agreed the results in Perth would only fuel arguments through the off-season about who was really the best pilot in 2008. Arch is the World Champion with 2 wins and 61 points while Bonhomme had 4 wins and 54 points. “Clearly it’s me,” said Bonhomme with a smile when asked what he would tell those debating about which pilot was the best in 2008. Arch replied: “It’s not just about who is the ‘best pilot’. It’s tactics, it’s the plane and it’s the team.”
